Description: For this assignment, we were asked to create an online course or unit. We needed to choose a unit that we could teach through blackboard as an online course. We then had to create assignments, activities, assessments and all other components that students would need to be able to complete our unit online. We had to include discussion board forums, learning units and online tests among other components. We also had to provide a syllabus that outlined the assignments for the course.
Analysis: This assignment had me a bit confused at first because I was not sure how detailed it was supposed to be. Once I finally realized that I was over thinking things, and I only needed lessons for a week, I decided to use a social studies unit that I already teach. This unit is broken into 4 lessons which each have two to three activities taking about 2 weeks to complete. I thought I was on the right track, but soon found out, I was still doing too much. I finally cut my unit down, and only put two of my lessons into the online unit. This would give the students about three assignments to complete, prior to their assessment. The unit would take one week including a pre-assessment and discussions.
Reflection: This assignment allowed me to bring together a lot of information that surrounds a unit I already teach. I was forced to create a syllabus that oultines the course work for students including topics for discussion, all of which is information i will be able to use in my classroom to supplement my original lesson plans. This assignment was exciting, and I learned a lot, but I wasn't extremely excited about it for one reason. That reason is that once our course is over, we won't be able to access the course, therefore we won't be able to use this course that we have spent time to create. I learned a great deal about creating an online course and what it involves, but I won't be able to use this in my classroom. It would have been interesting to put my students on computers for the week and let them experience online learning.
